The mural was commisioned by the
Monterey
Bay Aquarium as part of a conservation outreach program to
the Latino community in California. The mural was displayed as
a standard size billboard in cities like Oakland and Bakersfield,
areas with a large Latino population. The billboard messaging
encouraged conservation of California's ocean habitats.
Currently the mural is being reproduced (without ad messaging)
in three cities in California as part of a community education
program funded by the Aquarium. Marta projects the mural on a
selected building wall, draws the outlines of the figures and
wildlife, and it is then painted by students. Murals have been
completed in Watsonville and East San Jose; an additional mural
will be painted in Fresno in summer 2007.
