Public Murals by Marta Ayala

Marta Ayala's murals appear in public spaces throughout the Bay Area. Many of her mural projects involve participation and collaboration with students and community members, and adorn schools and public buildings in San Francisco, Richmond, Watsonville, East Palo Alto and East San Jose. Unless otherwise indicated, all murals are located in San Francisco.

Her mural, Manjushri, is featured on the Precita Eyes Mural Walk and is also featured in the book Murals: walls that sing by George Ancona.



Garfield High Murals
 

The Garfield High Mural  |  2006  |  East Palo Alto

The mural reflects the hopes of Garfield High students to transform their city into a more beautiful and peaceful city. The mural was painted entirely by students under Marta's direction.



All About Music

The McClaren CDC serves mainly special needs and developmentally disabled students. The mural was outlined by Marta using drawings made by the students and then it was painted by the students.




Monterey Bay Aquarium Mural

The mural was commisioned by the Monterey Bay Aquarium as part of an ocean conservation outreach program to the Latino community in the Bay Area and Central Valley.



Health Center #3 Mural

The murals were painted by neighborhood residents as part of a community project and the images reflect the variety of cultures served by the health center.



The Sanchez School Murals

The mural was designed and painted by students and teachers under Marta's guidance.



Bates College Mural

Marta was commisioned by the college to teach mural painting to Bates students as part of a Spanish Language course about the "muralista" movement in Mexico and Central America.



The Navigator

This mural was painted by Palo Alto middle school students as part of a school project on world exploration and discovery.



Look, Judge and Act

This mural reflects the often harsh reality of the Point Richmond community as well as a positive vision of what a progressive and aware community could be.



Alvarado School Murals
 

The Alvarado School Murals  |  2001-2002  |  625 Douglas

There were seven murals in this project reflecting nature and outdoor plant life. The murals were designed and painted by all five grade levels in the school.



Thurgood Marshall's Paradise

This mural was done in collaboration with Thurgood Marshall Academic High School art students and was meant to represent preservation of land and sea habitats.



Waiting for the 52 Excelsior

The mural depicts positive images of the Excelsior neighborhood; it also shows nature - represented by images of McClaren Park - and urban life existing harmoniously without any boundaries.



Manjushuri

Featuring the Tibetan Buddhist wisdom deity, the mural merges 17th century Tibetan Art with Latin American motifs and can be seen as part of the Precita Eyes Mural Walk.



Regeneración
 

Regeneración  |  2002  |  1050 South Van Ness

Located at the St. Mary's and St. Martha's Community Center, the mural shows images of recovery from addiction and the growing awareness of the self in relationship to it's surroundings.
